Book Review : A Tempest Soul by Oliver Phipps

Summary (from Goodreads)

Title: A Tempest Soul

Author: Oliver Phipps

Publication Date: 7 Aug, 2014

Publisher: Gray Door

GoodreadsAmazon – Barnes & Noble

Summary:

Seventeen year old Gina Falcone has been alone for much of her young life. Her father passed away while she was young. Her unaffectionate mother eventually leaves her to care for herself when she is only thirteen.

Though her epic journey begins in 1920 by an almost deadly mistake, Gina will find many of her hearts desires in the most unlikely of places. The loss of everything is the catalyst that brings her to an unimagined level of accomplishment in her life.

Yet Gina soon realizes it is the same events that brought her success that may also bring everything crashing down around her. The new life she has built soon beckons for something she left behind. Now the new woman must find a way to dance through a life she could have never dreamed of.

My Thoughts:

Wow! This book was just amazing! It was the first time I have read a book by Oliver Phipps, and I believe it will not be the last one. The book has a lot of emotions woven into it. It tells a story of a woman who had nothing and then climbed to her success with her power and determination.

The book has really string characters, especially Gina – the main character. I cheered on her all the way though out the book. I was screaming at her (in my mind) in the beginning, and catching my breath every time she succeeded or failed in something. I was something infuriated with her, especially in the last chapters, but afterwards I understood why it was done as it was. The way flamenco was described, made me want to study it and dance, but I just know that I am not that passionate about it, so I would not have that soul inside of me like Gina had. Her life “adventures” are amazing and are really lifely. Is there such word? The book is a story of a life. It has hardships and those hardships make a person harder.

The way Gina behaves and lives makes you wonder if you would have lived like that if you were she. The time frame is described as if the author lives in the 20s and seen everything himself. The style of writing, the words that he chooses to say in this or that situation makes the reader believe he is right next to the characters and not sitting on a couch and reading about them. The book sucked me into it from the first pages. It was the first time I could read in the bus, and I remember my friends were patting me to bring me back to reality.

I loved the book very much. I think it taught me something new. I can’t pinpoint it yet, but I know that after reading it something changed in me. I recommend this book to everyone, especially to whose, who have lost their way in life and try to seek something new. I hope you will enjoy it to its fullest. Happy reading, and don’t forget to share your thoughts with me. Stay tuned for more reviews at Katie’s Corner!

XOXO

1de41-excerpt

When the band begins to play, I can’t help but smile. I feel at home. This beach is my other home, now if only I could dance. As couples begin to shag on the dance floor, I can’t help but look at Brett’s reaction. He’s taking it all in and watching their footsteps. I begin to giggle. “What?” he asks. I stand and take him by the hand. “I have no clue how to do this.” “It’s easy. Just remember, one-two-three rock back. I’ll help you, no worries.” I wink. After a few songs, he becomes a natural and, we are laughing, smiling, and dancing like we have been dance partners for years. When the song ends, they slow things down and Brett never lets go of my hands. Instead, he pulls me close to him as we sway back and forth and my lips meet his. He takes me from the dance floor and leads me to the marshwalk. We walk hand in hand from Wicked Tuna to Sisters Marina while looking at all of the fishing boats and yachts. On our way back, we walk a little slower and stop to watch the tide flow into the marsh. Brett wraps his arms around me and I can’t help but look into the clear Carolina night
sky and pray this is real.

My Thoughts

Review covers 3 chapters

Ah, a good old shoujo manga. There are only 3 chapters and 2 one shots in the book. You get a load of drama and romance mixed together in only 3 chapters. This was the first time I have read Shibano Yuka’s work, but I will be covering some of her other works later on the blog.

Well, let’s see what we have here. We have a girl – Hana who falls in love with her classmate Tokumoto Rintarou. As always every character in shoujo manga has its secrets. And of course Rin is no exception. It seems that he was dating the teacher, but when Hana confesses to him, he doesn’t reject her and they actually do start going out. Those parts are a lot of fun; their dates especially and the banter between Hana and Rin. There is a portion of heartbreak in the manga, when Hana breaks up with Rin, so he can go back to his first love. But what will Rin choose? Will he go back to his relationship with the teacher or will he go back to Hana to have a happy end?

I liked this manga for its simplicity and for the not disappointing as a short shoujo manga. The characters were well developed even though there was not much said about them. Especially Hana. She was really mature, if you can call it that. She is fun, but at the same time she loves Rin unconditionally and she wishes him to be happy even if he is not with her. You will like her a lot. You will also love the one shots included in the book: 1 centimeter and my melody.

I hope you find about 20 minutes to spare and read it. You’ll like it a lot. Enjoy it to its fullest. Happy reading. If you liked it, share your thoughts with me.

XOXO
