~EXCERPT~

I stumbled into Kieran as a tremor moved through me, the hairs on my arms stood at attention like tiny lightning rods.
“Do you feel that?” my voice sounded breathless, even to me.
He glanced sideways. “Feel what?”
“Look.” I held out my arms to him, “I feel strange. Like someone…” I rubbed my slightly numb hands over my forearms and sucked in a breath, as he hooked his head around. I fell into step beside him. “Never mind. It’s probably nothing.”
This happens when lightning’s about to strike, right?
The heat from the sun radiated off the few cars parked along Boutique Row, their owners engaged in mid-afternoon shopping. Store fronts displayed the new and trendy ‘must-have’ dresses, shorts, and shoes for the spring season.
I paused to see my reflection. Not a hair was out of place. Thank God.The Coffee Grind’s signature cinnamon dessert scent wafted through the air, and my teeth hurt with the memory of sinking them into it time and again. What I wouldn’t give to be able to park my back end on one of their leather wing-back chairs and crack open a book, while the fire crackled next to me in the original stone hearth.
“Earth to Zoe,” Kieran’s gentle voice broke my trance. He poked my shoulder. “Are you going to order or what?”
My face flamed. “You could’ve ordered for me.” I rummaged through my purple backpack. “You know I get the same thing every time.”
Kieran watched me rub my arms, as he told the cashier, “She’ll also have an ice water.” He tilted his head toward the menu board. “Anything else?”
“Did you order me a chai?” I asked. He nodded. “Cause you know I can’t function without a good cup of—”
“You can’t function with it, either.”
Then I turned my attention toward the clerk, unsure if I recognized him or not. I hope he doesn’t know me. “Nothing else. Thanks.” I handed him some bills.
“How’s track going, Zoe?” the clerk asked.
Damn.
“Think you’ll make it to State?”
I realized he was a sophomore on the team. Our paths crossed during several meets. He looked thin in his black polo shirt, and I knew a mirror would reflect a similar physique in me, though my lavender sundress tried to disguise it.
I shrugged. “I have fast times, but we’ll see. If I don’t make it this year, there’s always senior year.” My fingertips skimmed the glass display of mammoth muffins and assorted pastries as we moved down the aisle to the ‘Pick-up Here’ sign. A heavy coffee aroma hung in the air.
A figure in dark clothing with yellow-tipped, spiked hair stared at me from outside the glass entrance door. His eyes narrowed on contact with mine. Chills rushed through my body.

He noticed her immediately. Every guy on the site noticed her.
She was tall and graceful, with a gorgeous smile, perfect features, creamy skin, and abundant red hair pulled back in a ponytail.
Her group—a half-dozen volunteers with axes, shovels, and other tools strapped to their packs—stopped to chat with the foreman and then edged single file onto the temporary bridge deck, bound for the meadow, where they would set up camp.
Joe was splitting rails on the opposite bank of the creek. He watched as she crossed the unfinished bridge, realized he was staring—ogling, in fact—and went back to swinging his axe. He couldn’t resist looking up again, though, and when he lifted his eyes, she glanced his way and smiled.
His swing went wide—completely missed the log he was aiming for—and he stumbled forward with a grunt, burying the axhead in the dirt. She laughed—once she saw that he was okay—and continued on with her group.

A freak accident, a moment in time, and life changes forever. Stay or go - there's no such thing as the easy way out. The accident wasn't his fault but in the horrific aftermath, Jack's actions may have possibly caused consequences he could never have foreseen. Consumed with guilt and unable to listen to reason, he takes the only option he believes is open to him: he disappears. Living a quiet life away from everyone he loves, he drops off the grid but the memories continue to haunt him.
Four years later, a funeral signals a homecoming fraught with tension as he finally forces himself to face up to the consequences of his actions. Betrayed and angry, his former best friend Callum wants nothing more than to see him disappear once again - for good this time. Meanwhile his ex-girlfriend Ally has moved on and he can see that his return is anything but easy for her. People change, life goes on and things are never as simple as they seem. The past has a habit of catching up with you when you least expect it.
Living with regret and guilt almost tore him apart, but there is no guarantee that trying to make amends will soothe his soul or help the people he loves the most.
Courage has many faces. Fighting for what you believe in, no matter what. Showing strength of mind and body when the cards are stacked against you. Rising to the challenge and playing through the pain.
And yet sometimes, courage means simply standing your ground.

excerpt

“You want to know if I told her about what happened that night.”
Callum glared at him, and Jack could tell he was on the right track.
“The answer is no, I didn’t. But why the hell didn’t you? You were there, you knew.”
“Because it wasn’t my place to tell her – it was yours.” Callum snapped.
“Jesus, Callum! You just let her think God knows what, all this time?”
“What the hell do you care what she thought! You weren’t here, remember? I didn’t tell her because what the hell would be the point?”
“What would be the point?” Jack repeated indignantly. “She would have known!”
“Known what? That you were a coward? She figured that one out for herself when she woke up and you were gone!”
Jack opened his mouth to speak, but Callum cut him off.
“Don’t you dare come back here and start blaming me or anyone else! No one told you to go – you made that choice yourself.” Callum hissed, eyes blazing. “You did the wrong thing then and by coming back now and stirring it all up again, all you’re doing is making it worse. You’re here for your own selfish reasons, not because of Tom or because of her!”
“I’m trying to make it right!” Jack insisted, heart racing.
“And how in the hell do you think you’re gonna do that?”
Jack stared at him dumbfounded, knowing that he had asked himself that question a million times and come up empty.
“She doesn’t need you anymore. The best thing you can do now is just crawl back into whatever hole you crawled out of and leave her be.”
Jack shook his head determinedly, his heart pounding. “No. I’m not going anywhere, not this time.”
Callum laughed scornfully. “That’s your master plan? Seriously?”
Jack glared at him in silence, his anger mounting.
“Oh come on – you gotta admit, that’s a reckless statement, especially for you.” Callum snorted derisively. “You disappear when the going gets tough, remember?”
Jack clenched his teeth so tight his jaw ached. “That’s not what happened and you know it.”
“Do I? Because that’s what it looked like from where I was standing!”
“You know damn well why I left!” Jack blurted out, his voice thunderous and desperate. “You knew what I did – you were there!”
“Yeah, I knew what you did - big deal! You were trying to save her life - she wouldn’t have blamed you!” he said hotly. “You did the wrong thing, Jack – you should’ve stayed.”
Jack stared at him, his heart racing. He thought about the relationship they used to have – how close they were. Like brothers. And now this; strangers - worse than that; enemies.
“I made a mistake.” he choked. “I won’t make that mistake again.”
Callum shook his head. He stood up straight and took a step backwards, eyeballing Jack as he forced his hands back into his pockets.
“Here’s the thing – you made your choice. Now you have to live with it, just like the rest of us. You can’t change what happened and if you stick around, you’re only gonna hurt her. Is that what you want?”
Jack opened his mouth to reply but Callum didn’t give him a chance.
“She was just starting to get her life back together, after everything she’s been through. Don’t rip it all apart again.” he pleaded quietly, clearly emotional. “Do the right thing this time - leave.”

Tour Stop & Review & Giveaway : Rise of Arcane Fire by Kristin Bailey (Secret Order #2)

Summary (from Goodreads)

Title:  Rise of Arcane Fire

Author:  Kristin Bailey

Publication Date:  February 4, 2014

Publisher:  Simon Pulse

Summary:

After her parents died in a fire and her grandfather disappeared, Meg Whitlock thought her life had come to a standstill. But when she learned that the pocket watch her grandfather left her was really an intricate key, Meg, with the help of a stable hand named Will, uncovered the Amusementists: members of an elite secret society dedicated to discovery and shrouded in mystery.

Now the Amusementists are convening in London, and Meg is determined to join their ranks. But being the first girl in the Order has its difficulties, and with Will away in Scotland Meg fears she can’t trust anyone but herself. Her worries are only supported by the sabotage happening at the academy, with each altered invention being more harmful than the last.

With threats lurking around every corner, and while trying to prove her worth as the first female Amusementist, Meg must uncover the identity of the academy’s saboteur before the botched devices become deadly. And after she finds evidence of a sinister and forbidden invention, Meg must stop it - or risk the entire future of the Amusementists.

My Thoughts:

It was amazing. Better than the first book. And now I am freaking out of my mind, because I don’t know if there is a third book. If you haven’t read the story yet, you are missing a lot. But don’t be afraid, just grab your copy of both books and start an amazing adventure into amusmentists secret world of clockwork inventions.

The story follows Meg, who now is going to start her studies at the academy. She is still in danger, and now that she is the first female student at the academy things start to get out of hand. There is a saboteur who wants not only to kill Meg, but make her first fail in her studies. And Will is off to Scotland to become a man Meg deserves (his words). While the first book was full of different clockwork creatures, and it was full of mystery and action, in this book author shows us Meg from a different side. She shows how Meg is coping with everyone and struggling to reach the goal she wants, and how she tries to solve the mystery all together. Secrets are still secrets, and many lay unraveled in the end of the book.

The book sucks you into it in no time, and at the end you are crying because you don’t know when will the sequel be published. Well that was all about me. We meet some new and interesting characters. The villain is much closer that you could have expected. And there are some to die for inventions, which leave you googling how to construct something like that. Believe me, I really googled it the first time I started the Secret Order Series. There is a new love interest or something like that. So it’s up to you to get your own copy to share a world of amusmentists with Meg. To see how it was a struggle for men to acknowledge that we – woman can think beyond household and gossip in the past. It is only up to you to decide if you are ready to get lost in many mysteries and secrets which can lead to death.

I hope you are now considering the book, so Happy reading! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. And don’t forget to share your thoughts!!!

XOXO

Katie

My Thoughts:

I can’t say I didn’t like the book, but it was not something I fell in love with, mostly it was a bit boring to read. It sucks you in the bits, and somewhere while reading I found myself frustrated with all characters and bored because the plot line was so slow in progressing. But the cliffhanger was not what I was waiting for and well, I was reading because I was curious how it all would end. Mostly when I finished I was frustrated that the book didn’t end like I wanted too.

Somehow the whole soul-mate thingy with the psycho lady as too out of theme. It was like a normal story and then somebody thought why not to add some paranormal, how? Oh, a psychic would be awesome. That whole concept lacked something that made it too imitative and unreal. Somehow none of the characters caught my eye to at least to like them. All of them are on some stage damaged, but they just always whine about themselves. Come on, they are not teenagers, every time I was reading some frustrated moment I wanted to shout: suck it up, put some big girl or boy pants and face the reality. I really wanted to see how characters were changing, but well there were little changes and in the end everything was dumped into a trash bin. I mean, there was quite an intriguing ending, but all that hard work on characters was just wasted.

I hope I didn’t make too repulsed to read the book. Maybe I just didn’t find what the author wanted to tell us rightly, but maybe you will. Maybe it will be your next favourite book. It’s all up to you to consider. If you choose it, happy reading. Enjoy every moment of it. If not, well… and don’t forget to share your thoughts with me, they mean a lot.

XOXO

Katie

Excerpt

Following, Ethan moves to her side, putting his hand against the trunk just above her head. His body pressing against her side makes her heartbeat quicker and her face flush. Breathing in her perfume, he becomes intoxicated by its sweet, seductive scent and lifts his free hand, wrapping it around her waist holding her there. His incessant stare is daunting, forcing her to look down, trying to avoid it. Christ, this woman is so beautiful when she tries to hide the way he affects her. Aware that his closeness makes her uneasy he presses his mouth against her ear and gently nips at her lobe. The warmth of his breath expelled heavily into her ear gives her goose bumps. Noticing her reaction, he moves his hand from her side and rubs up and down her arm trying to warm her. “Are you cold?” The muscles in her stomach tighten and her chest heaves as she inhales quickly. “No.” She shakes her head. “What then?” He knows what… he just needs to hear her say it. She looks up at him through alluring hazel eyes. “You.” “What about me?” Is it cruel that he needs her to confess? Torment her by making her say it aloud? She lowers her eyes again and whispers. “I hate you.” His hand stills on her arm and then moves back around her waist. His forehead pressed to the side of her temple he answers. “I don’t believe that’s true at all.” He slides his hand to her hip, tugging her as close to him as possible. Bringing her hand to her mouth, she bites at her fingernails nervously. Her stomach twists in anxious knots as she lays out her feelings. “I hate the way you make me feel.” She concedes. He inhales a deep breath and lets it breeze out warm and slow against her ear again. Finally he gets to the truth. Capturing her hand, he pulls it down, away from her mouth. Not feeling the need to control or overpower her in this moment his voice is gentle. “Look at me.” Trembling with vulnerability, she turns so they’re chest to chest and raises her eyes, locking his gaze to hers, green to hazel, the soulful energy of their connection, ineffable. “How do I make you feel?” His heart is beating with a strange wobble, nervous about her answer. “Frightened.” She pauses and swallows hard, exhaling as she whispers. “Excited.” Her voice is full of shame at her admission. “I see.” Lifting her hand to his mouth, he kisses each of her knuckles one at a time. Closing her eyes, she escapes his stare for just a few moments and gathers her thoughts before speaking again. “You make me feel like I’ve lost control… of my thoughts… my emotions.” “Is that so bad?” He presses her palm to his chest so she can feel the rhythmic beating of his heart. “You’re not the only one who feels that way. The moment I saw you… my heart beat your name.” Damn him and his ridiculously romantic side, she’s never going to survive it. “ I…I need to stay in control.” Her words are burdened by fear. His Irish brogue suddenly becomes thick and Irishy. “Sweetheart you are no more in control of what’s happening between us than I am. Whatever this is… it has its own destiny and we can merely follow its path, give in to its force… bend to its will.” Olivia is lost. Lost in his eyes.Lost in his words. Under his spell... and hopelessly ALL IN. Moving his hands to her hips, he squeezes them, pulling her closer. When she’s pressed up against him, he lifts his hand to her face. Her breathing is shallow and her nerves tingle with the anticipation of his next move. Kiss me, just kiss me already.

My Thoughts:

A story of love and friendship, of honesty and deceit. It combines everything in one heartbreaking but happily ending plot line. I somewhere have read that if you are not married to your best friend, you are looking in the wrong way, or something like that. I really didn’t care about that phrase the, but when I was reading this book, I remembered it. The story is your average love story, but the whole writing made it really interesting to read. It had some amazing characters and some really annoying, or maybe they were annoying only for me. But in the end I liked the story and had that happy tears on my face when I read “the End”.

The story follows a young girl – Olivia or as they call her Liv. In all that 300 or so pages we read nearly 4 years or more of her life, and well you may even think all 22. The story line is progressing fast, but it is not confusing at all. You don’t seem to be left out of anything and that’s amazing. Characters are all alive and they seemed like my own friends. I lived beside them; during the whole book I really wanted to strangle Brynn, but I cried when she got into the accident. I understood that there was some secret between Nathan’s and Liv’s parents, but it still shocked me, that they would do something like that to their little children. Who cares about a career at age of 9 so much that he would ruin the friendship between two best friends?

To say the truth I was not deeply motivated by any of characters, and when I asked myself why, I understood. They’re not pictured as perfect characters, they are normal as we all are, with all our faults. And somehow that was what made me like the book even more. everybody was average or like that, everybody had his/her issues and that made the book closer to reality that fiction. My last advice: don’t judge Nathan too much, he does seem like a dumbass, but he will open up during the book.

I hope you will consider reading this book, if not tell me what will you be reading next? If yes, Happy reading. Hope you enjoy every moment of it. And don’t forget to share your thought.

XOXO

Katie

Excerpt

I just look at him, shocked and speechless.  Here, I never once forgot about him and he looks like he can’t wait to get away from me. ME.
Before I say anything he starts talking, he lets out a frustrated sign, “Yes O, I do remember you, but that was a long time ago.  You don’t know me or anything about me now,” he states surprising me.
“Why are you being so rude?” I ask confused and hurt, because it’s been so long since I’ve heard him call me by the nickname O, the one he gave to me when we were kids.
“I’m not, I just don’t want anything to do with you,” he says looking intently at me.
“Why not?” I can’t believe he’s being this mean, this guy, one I freaking would have done anything for, and here he is being rude and wants nothing to do with me.  What the hell did I do to him?
“Like I said, I’m not that stupid little boy anymore.  We know nothing about one another and I don’t want to know you.  Stay away from me,” he says harshly.
I feel like I want to cry, but I won’t do that in front of him.  Instead I look him dead in the eyes, “You grew up and became an asshole,” and then I storm off towards the library, never looking back.
